Both of my children's grandfathers were the trustees on the first board of education that established the Sundown School District. (Raleigh Glimp and Lem Kearney) I recall the days before oil.  During the depression years my dad was secretary for the board and I recall the many letters he wrote begging the desk company to not foreclose on the district and to reclaim our desks and when teachers took vouchers which were only promises to pay, if and when the district had any money!  We were so thrilled when all the new comers came, and so appreciative of all the nice things oil monies provided for the district, but I feel sad sometimes that the really difficult years seem to be forgotten.

I taught in Middle School (6-7-8) 12 year (1981-1993)!

We moved to Sundown from Pettit, TX. when I was in 5th grade. To be able to teach at the school from which I graduated is truly one of the best gifts I have ever received, eclipsed only by the birth of my four sons!

I moved from Wink, Texas, to Sundown, where I started in the fifth grade. The school was bursting at the seams, and we stepped over construction to get into the 'new' grade school. Mrs. J. M. Burleson was our high school English teacher. One morning, after days and days of sandstorms, the day was still and beautiful. Mrs. B. took us from class early to go to the lunchroom. We stopped on the sidewalk beside the little pine tree, where Mrs. B. said, "God sends us all these bad days so we can appreciate a day like this". The last time I saw the little pine tree, it was growing out the top of the new school

I am retired from Putnam City Schools, in Oklahoma City, where I taught first grade for 29 years.

A graduate of Texas Tech, I taught in Lubbock and Midland before moving to Oklahoma.

I moved from Hobbs, NM., to Sundown in March of 1941, the fourth grade. I was in Mrs. Connie Guerry's room. In Mr. MacChristal's Ag class, I was chosen to enter the calf scramble at the Houston Fat Stock Show. I won my calf, and raised it to show the next year. Other teachers I hold fond memories of are: Mr. Key, Mr. Fite, Mrs. Burleson, Mrs. Carpenter, Mr. Mooney, and the coaches Hunt, McClesky, Green, and Edwards.

Retired in 1999

After graduating from Texas Tech, I worked as a geologist. On moving to Oklahoma, I owned and operated Wheat Logging Company.

my dad worked for the gulf oil co. we moved to sundown in 1938. dad was one of the first three production workers along with blacky craddock and i cant remember the other.i started to school in 1939,mrs fletcher was my first grade teacher,i remember she asked how high we could count, most of us could go to 10,but r.e. hensley could count to 100,i was impressed.in 1939 the 1st and 2nd grades were in the same room,in the red brick building, the bashetball court was a high wall, no top, with bleachers, and a dirt court.the school grew so fast that it had to use the old four room building located where the tennis courts were when i lived there.i always loved the home room plays we had, each class produced at least one a year for the whole school.i remember roller skateing in the gym, and of course sports were a big thing, and girling.i was also in love with miss pirkle my 8th grade teacher. i believe i recieved a good basic education, that equiped me well for my life. writing was not one of those things i excelled at as you can see.

i wouldn't know where to start,so many great memories, like our 8th grade play that mrs pirkle wrote with each of us playing the part we hoped to be when we grew up.i still remember one of my lines(well bust my britches and call me shorty) i was a rancher. mr. mac and the ag outings are a good memory, and of course football, and i bet we are all better now than then with the telling.

i completed texas tech in one semister, joined the navy, went into air traffic school, spent 4yrs with the navy then went to work for the U S government as an air traffic controller,i worked at dallas-ft.worth, little rock, ark., hobbs nm,and ended up at san anton approach control where i retired after 25 years combined military and civilian time. i was 47yrs old at the time so i moved to lometa tx and started ranching, i have lived here since 1981,the longest period of time i ever lived in one place. i married charlene marshall a sundown-levelland girl in 1964,about a year before i got out of the navy,we have 6 children,5 girls and 1 boy. we have 14 grandkids and 5 great grandkids.we are still active i break my own colts to ride ,show horses ,and work cattle, charlene does crafts keeps house and yard and helps me. we are enjoying life.

My greatest memory of the school in Sundown was starting and finishing here. We started in an old four-room school house. We finally got to see a new school built. I remember working on the new building after the old place was torn down. I finished my schooling in the new building in 1950.

I am a self-employed mechanic for about 37 years. My business,

Gene's Automotive, supports the Roughneck's school activities and advertises in "The Gusher" and football programs. I was fortunate enough to serve on the school board for seven years. In that seven years we saw another new

school building put up which still exists today.

JoAnn and I were fortunate to have three healthy boys,

Roy, Ricky, and Rusty Barry, who all started and graduated from Sundown High.

I have lived in this area all my life, starting out at my father's farm (Ulysses Barry) NW of town. I have enjoyed a number of years in this small town, and will probably retire here.

My great-grandfather was Pony (Napoleon) Hudgens, one of the early settlers in Hockley County. I have been told he helped organize the Sundown schools. He was insistent that 80 acres be set aside for the school district. That was one thing that made Sundown schools so rich; we not only receive taxes from the oil companies, but we have our own royalties.
I have the usual personal memories of winning football and basketball teams, band trips, classmates, honors and great teachers. As the years go by, I am especially appreciative of Wilson Pirtle.
I am proud to call Sundown my home town.

My most memorable times at SHS are basically related the many championship teams in football and track. The most appreciative high point was my selection to the First Team, Class A All-State Football Team in 1960.

That selection would have never happened if it were not for 32 other players on the 1959 football team and guys by the names of Ray Hopkins and C.H. Keeton. I love'em! Obviously, "Big Mack" my father and Ila, my mother, played tremendous roles in my high school years. For those four people, I'm in debt for life.

I am a retired U.S. Marine Lt.Col. (26 years) and I'm currently employed as a military analyst working for the United States Joint Forces Command at Fort Monroe Virginia. I have lived in Virginia long enough and want to come home. I started school in Sundown in 1949 (I think). (Gloria Kay (McInturff) Pace has "my" 1949 Gusher, so I can't "prove" when I started to school at Sundown. I have three children: Keith in Lubbock, TX; Leanne in Abingdon, Maryland; and Chris in Virginia Beach, VA. I graduated from West Texas State University in May 1965 and the same day committed myself to the Marine Corps for the next 26 years (didn't know that at the time). I hated Army ROTC. Sorry Foster, but the Army ROTC at WTSU stunked.

I have many fond memories of Sundown School. I suppose the achievements in sports and having good friends have to be the highlights. Looking back, I realize how naive all of us were growing up here. My, how the world has changed! Sundown has changed in many ways, however, much stays the same. There's still nothing better than being a Sundown Roughneck! I am a fourth grade teacher at Sundown ISD. Jimmie and I married two years out of high school. When we left Sundown in 1966, we were never coming back to live. Well, eight years later we came back for Jim to take over his dad's business. We realized Sundown's a great place to raise kids. Therefore, our two sons are Sundown grads, also. As this is home to us, we plan to retire here. Jim works for Bass Enterprises (formerly Sid Richardson Oil Co.) We are expecting our first grandchild in December and can hardly wait. We'd just about given up. Jim is an avid golfer, and we follow the Lady Raiders of Tech in basketball.

Since that time I have been enlisted in the US Air force where I learned that I had a natural talent for locating and repairing electro-mechanical problems on sophisticated equipment that have ranged from the F-4 fighter aircraft the Air Force taught me to repair the radar detection and jamming equipment on to high energy particle accelerators and many other systems used in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. I am happily married and a father of three beautiful girls, one of which is married and has given me the title of grandfather by bringing a boy into the world. I will always remember how close everyone

my class was. Alot of us worked together and played together. Playing what we called "vietcong", I guess because the Vietnam war

was still going one during our 8/9 and 10th grades. For those that are curious, we would have 2 or 3 guys start at one end of the town, usually down by the Roughneck drivein and they would take off on foot. They got a 5 minute head start then the 4 or 5 guys that stayed behind would go hunt them down in their cars. Rules were few, cars had to stay on the road was about it I can't tell you how many times I tore my pants shirt, scrapped every joint on my body and even once got upended by the closeline in Phillip, Steve and "Worms"(thats Robert) back yard with Scotty Hensley and Jody Carpenter hot on my heals. But mostly, I remember the football. I remember how hard we used to work from 2 a days thru the last week of the season. I remember the tradition of the team from it's start in the mid 20's and that old board that used to hang above the old ticket booth before the Slaughter Field was built.(anybody know if that old

board is still around?) And most of all, I remember the pretty girls. I still say Texas has the prettiest girls in the world and I am qualified to make that observation as I have been all over the planet in my days with the Navy. I got the prettiest one in South Carolina, but I will always remember the girls of Sundown High.

About thirty or more students were in trouble for leaving their rooms after bedtime during an out-of-town band trip. Each student caught had the choice of licks or a very long essay. Some of the boys had an advantage.  They knew that Mr. McSpadden's licks hurt. A few girls did not have this knowledge and choose to get licks. The boys laughed as these girls came out of Mr. McSpadden's office, smiling gracefully with tears running down their faces. Among the few was the superintendent's daughter, Lori. I admire her. She took her punishment well.

I work at Breckenridge Junior High. I'm a technology assistant. I'm the one that says, "I don't know. Ask the technology coordinator." I don't know if I could pick out just one "favorite" memory. Some of my favorites are the friends I made, our Senior Trip to Missouri, and the band trips. What a blast! I graduated from Texas A&M University in May of 1985 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Unfortunately, I've never used it! I have worked as a Civil Engineer for the past 14 years.

Currently, I am a Senior Engineer for ENPROTEC, Inc., a civil and environmental engineering firm in Lubbock.

I have been married to my wife, Elaine, for nearly 13 years. My daughter RuAnn is now 16 years old and a sophomore at Coronado High School in Lubbock. My son Geoffrey is a 9-year old 4th Grader.

Elaine and I are very active in our church; we both teach Sunday School and assist in the leadership of the children's department. In addition, I am PTA president at Geoffrey's school this year, coach his basketball and baseball teams, teach RuAnn's homeschool driver's ed course (pray for me!) and, when time allows, sleep!

Our family loves to camp, travel, play outdoors and attend hockey games (Go Cotton Kings!, and other sporting events).

My favorite memories of Sundown include the band trips with Mr. Mitchell, whether it was a fun trip or just a competition trip. His bus was always the funest one to ride on. Mr. Nauert's advanced biology and chemistry trips during spring break were always interesting. I remember our Chemistry trip when about 11 of us went to Port Aransas and Todd Arnold and I put crawfish on Mrs. Turner while she was sleeping on the boardwalk out to the tide trap. I still have many pictures of that trip.

I work for EPS Software Corp as a beta tester and level 1 software developer.

I have a daughter Latisha, who will be 16 in March and can't wait to get her car.(I am sure glad she has learned to drive in the big city, I had to relearn to drive!!!) She is in all of the GT and Honors classes at Klein Oak High School.

My son Andy, is in the 7th grade at Sundown Jr. High and plays football and basketball.

We all are computer geeks in our home, Tish is becoming a great programmer, we all three design and maintain web pages. Visit Tish at www.spiritflight.com and mine is at www.cleoann.com.

I still visit Sundown to see Andy and my mom (Carylon Boen)who are still living there as well. I have tried to get my mom to move down here after my dad died in Dec. 00, but she loves Sundown too much to leave. Everytime I come back, there is always another memory of High School that returns that I can share with my kids and husband.

I would have to say my entire senior year-not so much for being a senior and being on the verge of so many great and exciting

things, but for the formation of an incredible bond among a class that literally grew up together. That was a really fun year, and it still amazes me how close we all became-even if it was for only one year. I think in a small school, you come to depend upon your classmates a lot. I think we all realized that our little safety net was about to collapse, so we enjoyed each other while we could. Specific memories that come to mind are the Homecoming pep rally, the senior trip to Florida, hallway breaks, the day we got our cap and gown pictures made, and of course--graduation. We had a lot of fun together. I remember thinking that even though I may never see some of my classmates again, they will always remain very dear to me. And, they have.

I have so many wonderful memories of high school. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that were given to me through the school. I have fond memories of the band trips and the England trip. I will never forget Mrs. Tapp, because her influence made me decide to go into the "helping" field. I am also grateful to Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Shrader for teaching me all of that office and English stuff. I sure use it today! Sometimes my supervisor edits things differently (but she is WRONG)! I am a Children's Protective Specialist III with Children's Protective Services in Lubbock. I work with abused/neglected children in the rural counties surrounding Lubbock (yes, that includes Sundown). I also work with the children's families, foster parents, and adoptive parents. I get to testify in court on behalf of the children. I currently have between 20-30 children (on my caseload), and to tell you about them would use up all the space in this website. I am thankful everyday I found my way into this field. and I will never leave. I attended South Plains College for two years, and then transferred to Texas Tech. I graduated from Texas Tech University in 1997, with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development and Family Studies (minor: Substance Abuse Studies). I lived in Alaska for several months after college graduation. It was a great opportunity, but I hated it because I was too far away from my family. I bought a house in Lubbock in September 2000. remember the athletic events and the big crowds that were there cheering on

the athletes and coaches. I remember having the best basketball coach (Coach Field) that I have ever met. He reignited my love for basketball and he has

taught me how to handle success and failure in life and I will forever be grateful to him. I remember the success of the UIL teams and how we excelled academically above all the other schools. I remember the red and blue lights

that shined because of success. I remember losing loved ones and the amazing support from the community. I am proud of who I am. I am proud of the town
