BAND-
FRIDAY NIGHT
After much thought and conversation with Sundown ISD admin, it has been decided that the Roughneck Band will not travel to Hale Center tomorrow evening. Instead, we will have a rehearsal here in our stadium beginning at 6:00 pm. Attendance is required. Parents are welcome to be in the stands to watch the practice if you like...of course, please wear masks and practice social distancing.
This decision was tough one to make, but we do believe it is the right decision. The rehearsal tomorrow evening will be very important to our performance on Saturday as we put the finishing touches on what has become a great show.
Feel free to contact Mr. Mauldin if you have questions about anything.

Roughneck Nation,
Due to ever-changing conditions and circumstances, Sundown and Hale Center have agreed to cancel all sub-varsity football games for this Thursday. This includes both the 7th and 8th grade games as well as the JV game. Please know that this decision was not an easy one, and that the best interests of all student-athletes from both schools was taken into consideration. Thank you for your continued support of our kids.

Parents,
It has been a fast and crazy first six weeks, but it has been a good one! I wanted to let you know that we will host our first Character Counts assembly for the 20/21 school year on Friday. Due to COVID 19, the elementary students will be required to spread out across the auditorium. The students are required to have an empty seat in between them. Because of COVID 19 restrictions, and students taking up the majority of the auditorium, parents will not be permitted to attend this event. We will record the assembly and post it to our website as soon as we can get it uploaded. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month of October, Sundown HS Student Council and Social Action classes will be holding fundraisers to benefit local cancer patients.
On October 9th, we will be selling breakfast burritos from Burger King. Burritos include sausage, eggs, hash browns, and cheese on a 6 inch flour tortilla. The cost of the burritos is $2.00; proceeds will go toward making care packages for patients at Joe Arrington Cancer Center.
We are taking pre-orders and asking that you pre-pay by Friday, September 25th. Please email Mrs. Nichols at jnichols@sundownisd.com with your name, cell phone number, and order.
Burritos will be available for curbside pickup at the entrance North of the auditorium doors on October 9th, beginning at 7:30 AM.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL OF THE ROUGHNECKS & ROUGHETTES!

BAND FUNDRAISER 😄
The Roughneck Band Fireworks Stand is scheduled to open up on Wednesday, July 1st! Hours will be 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday (July 1 and 2), and 10:00 am to midnight on Friday and Saturday (July 3 and 4).

BAND
The Roughneck Band will be running a fireworks stand next week! Our anticipated opening date is Wednesday...stay tuned for when we make that official. We hope you can come out and support the Roughneck Band!

BAND
Practice reminder and ONE CHANGE for 8th Grade
Sorry to have to make a change in the first week, but for THIS WEEK ONLY, the 8th grade practice will be moved to Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. All other practice days and times will remain the same...Tuesday morning for 9th and 12th grade, and Thursday morning for 10th and 11th grade. All practices are from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Thank you for your patience as we make everything work! We are looking forward to seeing our freshmen and seniors tomorrow!

BAND PRACTICE FOLLOWUP
To clarify: The June and July practices work just like strength and conditioning for athletics. If students are out of town for any of these, that’s ok! The August rehearsals are mandatory, as always. Let us know if you have questions!

BAND PRACTICES START NEXT WEEK
We all wish our school year hadn’t been cut short, but due to those circumstances, UIL has released guidance for offering marching band practices in June and July this summer. This is not an opportunity we normally have, so let's make the most of it!
Practices begin next week on the band practice field by the facility. These practices will take place weekly from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the days listed below. These weekly practices will be divided into the following groups:
Tuesdays: 9th and 12th grade
Wednesdays: 8th grade
Thursdays: 10th and 11th grade
**NOTE: The only week these practices will not be offered is July 13-17.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS FOR BAND PRACTICES
--All students must have a physical on file with Sundown ISD. If you had one for the 2019-2020 school year, you may come to the practices in June and July. If not, you will need to have one before attending and bring the paperwork with you.
--For now, all practices will take place on the band practice field by the facility. We will not be practicing with instruments until further notice, so students should not need to enter the building. However, if a student would like to take an instrument home to practice, let me know and I will bring it out to the practice field.
--Hand sanitizer will be available.
--Social distancing will be observed during practices as students will be 15 feet apart, exceeding the distance recommended by UIL.
--As recommended by UIL, we will not provide water, food, sunscreen, or other items. Students will need to bring their own water...hydration is important! Sunscreen is also recommended.
--Masks and gloves will be available, or students are welcome to bring their own.
--Students who are not feeling well should not attempt to practice. If a student is experiencing any of the following symptoms, he/she will need to stay home: Fever, shortness of breath, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, chills, shakes, loss of taste or smell, cough
--Students will be pre-screened before they are allowed to practice.
**Side note: For those who like to plan ahead, our usual Summer Band rehearsals will begin on Monday, August 3rd. As always, these rehearsals are mandatory. We will send out more information in July with specifics on these rehearsals.
Thanks for reading this long post! We're excited to have all of this information to share and look forward to seeing everyone soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ~ MAY 9th ~ Brylee VanWettering - 4th grade ~ Have a great day, Brylee!

Sundown ISD has partnered with the City of Sundown in an effort to get maximum participation in the 2020 Census. The census is important in terms of state and federal funding for our county, city, and school. For each student/family that completes the census you will receive a confirmation code. If you complete the census and e-mail the confirmation code to your campus principal your student(s) will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. One code per family will cover all your kids if you get the code to their principal. If you have a kid on each campus, email all 3 campus principals that code and in theory you could win 3 different $100 Wal-Mart gift cards. If you have 3 kids on one campus then all 3 of them would be entered in the drawing with 1 code. There is no penalty for anyone who doesn’t complete the census, but we feel it is very important that Sundown be reflected accurately in this 2020 census.
Please visit https://2020census.gov/ to complete the survey. Codes need to be to the campus principals by 3:00 on May 19th. On May 20th we will have a facebook live drawing for the gift cards. If you have any questions feel free to call the school.

High school students...I know this is not the way any of you envisioned this school year going. It isn’t close to what we envisioned either as a staff. So much of this is out of your control and ours. Let’s make the best of our current situation! Your parents, teachers, coaches, and sponsors have all been preparing you for life’s challenges and now it is your turn to do what you always do...take on new challenges and overcome! Good luck! You all are the best! Make the best of this situation and give your Sundown all!
