Invitational Learning with SMS 8th Grade ELA Teacher Mrs. Garcia
Sundown Middle School students in Mrs. Toni Garcia's reading class have had a great 1st 6-weeks! Her passion for reading is evident in the details she places into her activities and her learning environment. Mrs. Garcia is a master teacher with her style of invitational learning. Students recently had the opportunity to learn about Greek mythology. They learned about Cronus and how the Olympians came to be, studied the myth of Hades and Persephone, and had a great time creating a gossip TV FlipGrid of Perseus slaying Medusa set in Ancient Greece with a modern twist. At the completion of the project, students were treated to a book tasting to introduce the next lesson, Percy Jackson. They were given hot chocolate or "nectar of the gods" and were given the "Starbucks" touch as their Greek god name was written on their coffee sleeve! The most entertaining part was getting the chance to watch the videos that students created (including the bloopers!). Students got to watch book trailers for their upcoming book study, and are seemingly growing fonder of reading because of their learning environment! Great job Mrs. Garcia!

The Cross Country meet at LCU scheduled for this morning was just cancelled due to water on the course. The kids are going to get some breakfast and head back home.
