Today, Sundown ISD joined a group of 250 school districts and education organizations in asking the Texas Education Agency to pause its planned “refresh” of the A-F Accountability System which would retroactively increase the bar for College, Career and Military Readiness by 47%. We urge the legislature to intervene and ensure the elected representatives of the people evaluate the accountability system holistically to improve how we measure success and communicate school performance to families.

Day one of the HS Apollo trip started out with half of our group spending the morning volunteering at a non-profit for Shea Beadles senior research project. The students visited Mobile Loaves and Fishes Community First Village- a well planned community that provides housing for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas. Our kids fed the neighborhood breakfast and spent a few hours interacting and fellowshiping with the neighbors.  Shortly following this opportunity, we were able to meet up with the rest of the Apollo kids, a big thank you to Jason and Nicole Powell for their time and willingness to bring the other half of our group to Austin!  We then went to GameON! to do an in-person, live, game show experience. "The Beetles" won the show! Following the gameshow, several students who have spent time researching areas related to the medical field, met with Dr. Tim Wilson for a tour of Dell hospital and a brief Q&A session.  We ended the day by attending the musical Cinderella, at Zach's Theater. This was a unique experience because the show was produced in partnership with Deaf Austin Theater and was partially in sign-language.

Kennedi’s Kicks 4 Life The story of the late Kennedi Diaz from Sundown High School lives on through her legacy of love! The Diaz family has been showcased in a recent segment with EverythingLubbock.com. Sammy and Debbie Diaz continue to honor the life and death of their daughter Kennedi through Kennedi’s Kick 4 Life, dedicated to purchasing shoes for students battling cancer. They have purchased their first pair and hope to continue this act of love through this newly founded act of love. (Also for the sneaker-heads, the first pair purchased were the Dark Iris Jordan 3 Retro’s… a purple pair of Jordan’s). Continuing to send out love to the Diaz family from Sundown ISD. https://www.kennediskicks4life.org https://www.everythinglubbock.com/news/local-news/south-plains-family-honors-daughters-memory-kennedis-kicks-4-life-walking-in-faith-jordan-style/

CALLS LIKE THIS DO NOT HAPPEN OFTEN Last week I received the following call from one of the officials who called the Sundown/Ropes playoff game in Brownfield. I thought it was too good not to share. “I loved the atmosphere last night! The coaches, players, fans, students…they were great! We have had several incidents in the Lubbock area this year and I am appreciative of the kind of experience I was a part of last night. Everyone was classy…this was just an outstanding atmosphere! Last night’s game was a big win for the Lubbock area! As officials, we appreciate these types of games and experiences. I have done this for many years and plan to hang it up in a couple of years, but if all the games and crowds were like last night’s, I think I could ref another 30 years!” This speaks volumes about our players, coaches, students, and community at large! We all know how much we appreciate the Roughneck Nation. It is also encouraging to see how others perceive us!! Thank you all for your continued support of our students and staff! Brent Evans
