Jaelin Wylie finished 10th and Ariel Hernandez finished 15th at the Girls State Powerlifting Meet today in Frisco! They have had a great season, and capped it off today with great effort and determination! The State Meet is the biggest platform that these student athletes can compete. It is the culmination of a grueling season with sore muscles, and more failed attempts than successes. The goal is to overcome the challenge of moving heavy weight, coming up short, and having to face the weight again! It is up to these athletes to lift the weight of their choosing as they are only encouraged by their coaches, teammates, friends and family... but it is up to them to move the weight! These 3 lifts of squat, bench and deadlift are very technical lifts and require hours upon hours of training. They get 1 attempt at each of the 3 weights they choose per lift, and have to be strategic to compete with the other qualifiers. Luckily for us, we have some of the best in the business to set our students up for success. Coach Barry Newton and Coach Sarah Goodman have done a great job providing these young ladies all the necessary tools to be successful. Today was a bitter sweet ending to our season, but we couldn't be prouder of or Roughettes! Jaelin and Ariel represented the red, white and blue well today! A great season for 2 individuals with a lot of heart and determination! There ain't nothing better than being a Sundown Roughneck!

State Meet is here! Ariel Hernandez and Jaelin Wylie will compete this morning at 8 AM! Best of luck to our Roughettes in Frisco today! This is the biggest stage for our lifters... the time to prepare is done... it's time to lift some heavy weights!!!

Girls State Powerlifting Meet 2023
Safe travels and best of luck to our Sundown Roughettes, Ariel Hernandez and Jaelin Wylie, who are currently in Frisco for the upcoming THSWPA State Powerlifting Meet! The meet will be held on Wednesday, March 15th at 8 AM at the Comerica Center. They weigh in today, and prepare for their inaugural State Powerlifting Meet! They will represent Sundown with class and strength! We pray for a safe trip and a great meet for these 2 young ladies!

36th Consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for the Pride of the Oil Patch!!!
The Roughneck Band performed Thursday in the Region 16 UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation. With first division ratings from all 6 judges, along with the first division from the marching season, the band completed the 36th consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for Sundown High School!
And wow…they did so in style! They showcased both their technical skill, musical maturity, and endurance with an extremely challenging, fun, and exciting program. These students are so talented in so many ways! Many of them changed out of their band uniform and sprinted away to a track meet, and some to The Facility for the Regional Powerlifting Meet, while others helped us run the rest of the 13-hour event, plus clean-up afterward! We are very thankful to these students for their time, their efforts, their talents, and for being some of the very best kids in the whole world.
Thanks so much to Ashley Blount, Angela Greenhaw, Martha Sue Lusk, Mike Glaze, Zach Munoz, Amber Mauldin, and Chris Wheeler for managing the different areas of the event today. And thanks to our 6th and 7th graders who also helped run this event…they were nothing short of fantastic! It was a very smooth and successful day all around! It takes a village, and ours is the absolute best. Also a special thanks to Mr. Justin Mauldin for organizing this event... as well as preparing our Band for the opportunity to continue as one of our strongest traditions in Sundown.... the Sundown Roughneck Band!

There is a slight schedule change for our softball games tomorrow, Saturday March 11th. Sundown Varsity will play Petersburg at 12:00 pm and Sundown JV will play Littlefield JV at 2:00 PM.
