Sundown Principals travel to the State Capitol!
As part of the Raise Your Hand Texas Program, Jeremy Griffith (Sundown High School Principal) and Miguel Salazar (Sundown Middle School Principal), attended 3 days of professional development in Austin. This program is funded by the Charles Butt Foundation and provides educators opportunities to develop 21st Century Leaders. This program has allowed both Mr. Griffith and Mr. Salazar the opportunity to attend a week-long professional development learning experience at Harvard University, utilizing both classrooms and professors at Harvard! The follow up workshops that they have attended over the past couple years has focused on leadership growth and capacity, student advocacy and student equity. Part of the experience is meeting with Legislators to tell the Sundown ISD story. Our Principals had the opportunity to meet with Texas House of Representative Ken King from District 88, and a staff member from Senator Charles Perry’s office, Shannon Harmon. During these visits, they were able to express their concerns for state accountability, school funding, student and teacher’s mental health and teacher retention. Learning at Sundown ISD isn’t only for our students. Our teachers and administrators are also lifelong learners and are working diligently to do what is best for our students at Sundown ISD.

Coach Hand-Watson vs Former Athlete
31 years ago, Coach Kim Hand-Watson had the opportunity to coach a talented athlete in Shella Graves from Motley County. Fast forward to this past Friday night and Shella Graves Arnwine sets her lineup to prepare the Roscoe Plowgirls to take on her former Coach in the Area Playoff game held in Post, TX. Shella’s dad was Coach Hand-Watson’s first AD at Motley County. Coach had Shella in 6th and 7th grade and she moved to Roby her freshman year but was well on her way to a successful athletic career, and now into a successful coaching career! Coach Arnwine’s Plowgirls fought to the bitter end, but our Lady Roughettes proved to be too much! Our Roughettes had a comfortable lead for most of the game, but Coach Arnwine fought tooth and nail to throw everything possible at her former coach! However, the relentless work ethic, drive, attitude and defense allowed the Roughettes to finish the game strong and come out victorious as Area Champions! Coach Hand-Watson enjoyed coaching Shella as an athlete, and was grateful to have the opportunity to coach against her former athlete!
Our Roughettes get the W, as we continue our Gold Ball Chasin’ streak alive! We encourage our community to come out to Brownfield on Tuesday night as we take on the Ropes Lady Eagles for Round 3 of the playoffs, as well as a Round 3 matchup after having split games with them in District play!
