Saturday, March 2nd, students from the 5th, 6th, & 7th grades played solos and ensembles to be judged against the "band standard". At the completion of the festival, 90 students made up a variety of 40 entries earning 5 Outstanding ratings, 34 1st division ratings, and 1 2nd division rating. A 2nd division rating is an Excellent rating at the "Meets Expectations" level. A 1st division is a Superior rating at the "Mastery" level. An Outstanding rating is reserved for those students who are judged as a "Perfect Score".
In addition, students were given some guidance during band on what and how to develop solo and ensemble skills, but the majority of their success was self-led, requiring cooperation, patience, and commitment. One judge commented that every group was receptive to suggestions and eager to improve even after their performance was essentially over! Another comment from a judge praised students for continually developing as musicians with obvious growth between grade levels.
We are proud of how these ladies and gentlemen conducted themselves, worked toward a goal, and followed through with commitment even when faced with challenges along the way. Each musician embraced excellence and showed their "Sundown 'Smarts'!" Congratulations to all performers!
