The Texas Girls Coaches Association has named three Sundown Roughettes to their All State teams. TGCA states "These athletes have accomplished very special honors which our association recognizes each school year for our membership coaches" "This is a great honor and achievement for these young ladies, as well as their coaches and their school". Through academics, these ladies continue to show what it means to have Sundown HEART, to be Sundown STRONG, and to have Sundown HEART! We are so proud of each of you and wish you the very best as you move on from Sundown High School!
Please help to congratulate:
Academic All-State
JoAnna McAdams: Academic All-State Golf
Gabriella Peralta: Academic All-State Track
All-State
Micaela Hernandez: All-State Track

Please help us to congratulate Elizabeth Corley on her State Championship Outstanding Performance at the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Competition in the Vocal Solo Contest. If you will recall, Elizabeth was the "X Factor" in our Marching show this past fall with her beautiful solo that always brought chills down our spine with her singing during the halftime show on Friday nights!
Of the approximately 100,000 students participating in the regional UIL music contests and the thousands of musicians who performed at TSSEC, only 2-3% of the solo performances earned the distinguished honor of being recognized as an OUTSTANDING PERFORMER! This achievement is truly a mark of musical excellence!
Please join us in congratulating Lizzie Corley for a job well done!

Congratulations to Koy Torres as he was recently named to the Lone Star Varsity Baseball Team! Koy was named 2nd Team Shortstop, accumulating a .470 batting average with 36 runs, 12 doubles and 18 RBI along with the District 5-2A Defensive Player of the Year. Congratulations to Koy on this great accomplishment!

Sundown ISD Board Member Ricky King Serves at his Last Sundown Board Meeting
Sundown ISD would like to wish Ricky King farewell as he leaves his seat on the Sundown ISD School Board! He served as a teacher and coach in Sundown for 10 years, and served as a Board member for the past 5 years! We are grateful for his guidance, wisdom and leadership during his time as a teacher, coach and board member. Coach King has been instrumental in continuing the strong traditions and high expectations for Sundown in his collective 15 years. He will be missed! Thank you to Mr. Ricky King, front and center, for your service to our school, our community and most importantly for our kids!

As we travel around South Texas, we represent something bigger than ourselves. We travel in 2 beautiful buses with the words “Sundown Roughnecks” plastered across the sides of these massive vehicles. People see us coming, and our goal is to always leave them thinking “that’s a pretty special group right there!”
This trip wasn’t any different. For those that are not familiar with our process, we always leave a hotel room mindful of the staff that is paid to clean up after us. To Mr. Mauldin and our band sponsors credit, we always have our students clean their room, but we also remove all sheets and covers and neatly fold them at the edge of the bed. This allows the staff to come in and quickly clean the room to prepare it for the next customer. Mr. Mauldin received a phone call from the hotel manager, after we left, almost in tears because of the way the Sundown Roughnecks carried themselves. In her words, “I’ve been in the hotel business for 16 years, and I have never witnessed such a kind gesture. We would LOVE to have y’all come back to our hotel and teach other schools and church organizations how to do this! Please, please, please come back and see us.”
To our Band Director, Mr. Mauldin…..Thank you! Thank you for this trip! Thank you for the hours of planning to make this the absolute best experience for our students. Thank you for your attention to detail, and for your passion to make this the best trip possible! Thank you for leading our children to leave such an impression on people that they ask for us to come back! Something as simple as folding our bed sheets and leaving them on the beds to make life easier for those that have to clean up after us! Thank you!
We also want to thank our Band Sponsors for their hard work throughout the week! They endured long days in the sun, check-ins with the students, and have been absolute troopers in helping to organize the chaos of taking all of these students on a 10 hour bus trip to the southern tip of Texas! They have helped to keep the water iced down, loading and unloading the bus, doing a headcount at every stop so that we can come home with all of the kids that we brought, and most importantly for their genuine love of our children. Parents, rest assured that your children were with loving adults that sacrificed a week of their time to care for your kids! So thank you to Assistant Band Director Ashley Blount, sponsors John & Mandee Russell, Robert & Diana Garza, Jonna Evans, A’ndrea McAdams, Amber Mauldin and our bus drivers Coach Watson and Lacy McAdams… THANK YOU!!! This trip wouldn’t have been possible without your servant hearts!
Here at Sundown… we are the GOLD standard in all that we do! From performing at a high level in band, academics and athletics to how we carry ourselves and the values we instill in our students like cleaning up after ourselves in a hotel! We have great people leading our children, and we have great children that will go on to change the world for the better!
It pays to be kind!

Shortly after the last post… our bus literally broke down outside of Sands CISD! A couple phone calls were made, and our Guardian Angels sent us Sands CISD Superintendent Wayne Henderson to the rescue. He provided us with one of their Sands buses to transport our students home safely! Thank you Sands CISD and Wayne Henderson for your generosity! Now we can continue on our trek home… we hope to make it home by 5:30 now! (For the record, I made Wayne stand for the picture… he didn’t want any recognition for his kindness… but that’s not the Sundown way, we wanted to show our appreciation for what he did!)

Attention Middle School Parents: Information Regarding STAAR Results & Summer School
STAAR Results:

Parents,
I just wanted to give you all an update on STAAR scores. Paper test results have been delayed across the state. It will be at least next week before we know how your child did. Because of this, we will be pushing back the start of summer school from May 31st to June 6th. This will give us time to get STAAR scores in, analyze them, and to get a more accurate idea of who would benefit from extended education through the summer. Thank you for your patience as we wait on results.
Thanks,
Jason Powell
