37th Consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for Sundown High School Band!
The Roughneck Band performed this morning, earning first division ratings from all 6 judges! Along with the first division from the marching season, the band completed the 37th consecutive UIL Sweepstakes for Sundown High School. The Roughneck Band continued their legacy of excellence with absolute class and amazingly represented our school and our town! They showcased their technical skill with “Choose Joy”, their musical maturity with “Aria Cantabile”, and their endurance with an extremely challenging, fun, and exciting program and a march entitled “New Horizons”. These students are so talented in so many ways! Many of them changed out of their band uniform and sprinted away to New Deal for a track meet, and some to Brownfield for the Regional Powerlifting Meet, while others helped us run the rest of the 2-day event, plus clean-up afterward! We are very thankful to these students for their time, their efforts, their talents, and for being some of the very best kids in the whole world. Thanks so much to Ashley Blount, Mack Bibb, Melanie Clausen, Angela Greenhaw, Martha Sue Lusk, Rodney Bennett, Zach Munoz, Amber Mauldin, and Chris Wheeler for managing the different areas of the event today. And a HUGE thanks to our band students (both middle school and high school) who helped us as band guides, stage crew, and Sightreading crew….they are truly the engine that makes these contests go! It was a very smooth and successful couple of days! It takes a village, and ours is the absolute best. THANK YOU to those who were able to come out and support these students today! When you see these students, let them know what a fantastic job they’ve done this year!
- Mr. Justin Mauldin

Sundown HS Student Morgan Griffith Shares Her Story
In the Spring 2024 Lubbock Senior Link Magazine, Honoring Seniors Edition, Sundown HS Senior Morgan Griffith had the opportunity to honor one of her teachers at SHS! It is no surprise that she chose to honor her English Teacher, Mrs. Johnnie Jones! This is a great article that brings to light the value that our educators at SHS bring to our students. This is one of many stories that can be told, and Morgan Griffith has captured the sentiment of so many! A huge thanks to Morgan for bringing to light all the great characteristics that embody Mrs. Jones, and also to Mrs. Jones for serving as a mentor, coach and leader to Morgan and so many of our students at SHS!
