Sundown Alumni, Class of 2003, Jimmy Cruz was invited to this evenings FCA gathering to share his testimony… and what a powerful message he brought! It is almost surreal to think that on March 19th, 2002 (more than 22 years ago) his world was literally turned upside down in the very building he was speaking at this evening! Jimmy had the opportunity to speak on his life before the accident that left him paralyzed, the 20 years of pain, suffering and addiction and the past 2 years of REDEMPTION after having given his life to our Lord and Savior. He spoke of his time at Sundown fondly as he remembered the impact that Coach Benny Granger and Shane Le Fevre had on his life, the fun times he had playing football alongside Ryan Parrish and the Salazar brothers, and the competitive drive that allowed him to experience so much success as a Sundown Athlete… and then the pole vault incident, as a 16 year old during his Junior year in High School that would change his life, for the rest of his life. He spoke on the battles he had with alcohol that turned into drug abuse. He spoke of the friends he acquired through his addictions that only exacerbated the issues he was running from. He spoke in truth and in love of the disappointment he felt around his family because of his shortcomings and how he continued to mutter “I’m fine” when he was asked how he was doing by so many of the community members of Sundown as a teenager and how he continued masking his true feelings as an adult that led to 20 years of hardship…. But the story doesn’t end there! He came to know our Lord and Savior and has committed his life to following Jesus the past 2 years… and his only regret “I wish I would’ve come to know Jesus 20 years ago”. His message was somber but powerful, and we are blessed that our students had the opportunity to hear his message. He encouraged the students, “if you are dealing with something, don’t hold it in, don’t keep it to yourself and think you have to figure it out by yourself. Reach out to your loved ones and let them know how you are feeling. Ask for help”. Jimmy gave his blessing for us to share part of his testimony on our Sundown social media outlets. Continue to pray for Jimmy on his journey, and please know that he is in a great place in his life… he’s in high spirits and knows that God is using him in powerful ways… he has even recently taken up competitive tennis! Thanks again Jimmy Cruz for sharing your message. Much love to a fellow Sundown Roughneck! (Pictured with Jimmy are his nieces, SHS students Julia and Sarah Posadas).
