SMS Principal Miguel Salazar Named Region 17 TASSP Middle School Principal of the Year Please help us in congratulating Mr. Miguel Salazar as he was just named the TASSP Region 17 Middle School Principal of the Year! Mr. Salazar was recently named by his colleagues in Region 17 to serve as the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Middle School Principal of the Year! Mr. Salazar is currently serving in his 3rd year as the SMS Principal, and is in his 20th year in education. He earned his High School Diploma from Sundown High School (2000), an Associates Degree from South Plains College (2002), a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Texas Tech University (2004), a Masters in Educational Administration from Lubbock Christian University (2010), and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Education from Texas Tech University. He will have an opportunity to submit an application for TASSP Middle School Principal of the Year for the State of Texas later this year. If you happen to see him around, please let him know that we are proud of him and are grateful that he is a Sundown Roughneck, again! Congratulations on a well deserved honor, Mr. Salazar, our TASSP Region 17 Middle School Principal of the Year!

Saturday, March 2nd, students from the 5th, 6th, & 7th grades played solos and ensembles to be judged against the "band standard". At the completion of the festival, 90 students made up a variety of 40 entries earning 5 Outstanding ratings, 34 1st division ratings, and 1 2nd division rating. A 2nd division rating is an Excellent rating at the "Meets Expectations" level. A 1st division is a Superior rating at the "Mastery" level. An Outstanding rating is reserved for those students who are judged as a "Perfect Score". In addition, students were given some guidance during band on what and how to develop solo and ensemble skills, but the majority of their success was self-led, requiring cooperation, patience, and commitment. One judge commented that every group was receptive to suggestions and eager to improve even after their performance was essentially over! Another comment from a judge praised students for continually developing as musicians with obvious growth between grade levels. We are proud of how these ladies and gentlemen conducted themselves, worked toward a goal, and followed through with commitment even when faced with challenges along the way. Each musician embraced excellence and showed their "Sundown 'Smarts'!" Congratulations to all performers!
